New messages to increase understanding of sexual violence and the available legal support

Legal Services has today launched a series of targeted video messages designed to increase understanding of sexual violence, clarify behaviours that constitute an offence, and raise awareness of free and confidential legal assistance available through its Sexual Violence Legal Service (SVLS) pilot program.

The messages form part of a broader sexual violence education campaign and will be delivered primarily through social platforms, targeted at young women aged 16–24.

The content speaks directly to young women in a relatable and accessible way, using language and scenarios that reflect real experiences identified through research and consultation with sector partners.

The messages focus on four scenarios that reflect common behaviours experienced by victims of sexual violence:

  • incapacity to consent
  • consent
  • image-based abuse
  • inappropriate touching

Legal Services CEO Annmarie Lumsden said the campaign is designed to address a critical gap in awareness for young women about what sexual violence looks like and where to seek help.

“Many young women experience harm without recognising that what has happened to them is illegal, or without knowing that free legal support is available,” Ms Lumsden said.

“These messages clearly show that behaviours which may be minimised or dismissed as simply ‘uncomfortable’ or ‘awkward’ are, in fact, sexual violence, and that support is available.”

“Awareness and early understanding are key to empowering victim survivors to seek help on their own terms,” Ms Lumsden said.

While the campaign is primarily targeted at young women, also it has a secondary aim to educate perpetrators and potential perpetrators, by clearly identifying behaviours that are illegal and unacceptable.

The video messages raise awareness of the SVLS pilot, which provides free, confidential and trauma informed legal assistance to people who have experienced sexual violence in South Australia, with a specific focus on women under 25.

Anyone in South Australia who has experienced sexual violence, recently or in the past, can access free and confidential support by contacting Legal Services on 1300 366 424.
