10 December 2025
New age restrictions apply to online social media platforms from 10 December 2025.
Changes to Commonwealth laws now require providers of certain social media platforms to take reasonable steps to prevent children under the age of 16 from having their own account.
Children under 16 will not be punished for using social media and neither will their parents, carers or teachers.
The eSafety Commissioner has released lists of services that the Commissioner considers will, and will not, fall within the new age restrictions:
Services that eSafety considers will be age-restricted social media platforms
Services that eSafety considers will not be age-restricted social media platforms
These lists are not definitive but instead reflect the eSafety Commissioner's views as at 21 November based on the new Commonwealth laws. Unless the Government prescribes specific social media platforms, whether a platform falls within the new age restrictions will ultimately remain a matter for the court.
The eSafety Commissioner has set up a social media age restrictions hub which provides information, resources and support for young people, parents, carers and teachers.
