Expanded police powers to search for weapons: further public places declared

South Australia Police have issued further declarations for the purposes of their expanded powers to search for weapons in public places.

From midday 30 December 2025, police may search people and their belongings for weapons using a metal detector if they are:

  • on, entering or leaving a public bus or tram service in the Adelaide metro network
  • on, entering or leaving the public train services for Belair, Gawler, Seaford, Flinders, Outer Harbour, Grange and Port Dock
  • in, entering or leaving a public transport interchange, station, or 'park 'n' ride' used by Adelaide Metro services (including associated car parks and structures).

For the purposes of public safety, police may order any person on a declared public transport service or in a declared public transport hub to leave and not return for 24 hours. It is an offence to remain or return to the area within 24 hours if ordered to leave.

Police have also given notice that the 2026 Santos Tour Down Under (16 25 January 2026) is a declared public event, meaning anyone visiting the City of Adelaide Tour Village or a public place within 50 metres of an official route may be searched for weapons, or ordered to leave if deemed a risk to safety.

The following events on 26 January 2026 have also been declared public events for the purposes of the expanded search powers:

  • Mourning in the Morning and Lights on the River 2026 in Elder Park and Pinky Flat (12:01am to 11:59pm)
  • Survival Day 2026 in Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga and King William Street (12:01am to 11:59pm)
  • 2026 Glenelg Australia Day in Glenelg, including Wigley Reserve and Colley Reserve (12:01am to 11:59pm)
  • Australia Day Rally 2026 in Peace Park, Adelaide and King William Street (10am to 4pm).

A complete list of declared events and places currently in effect, along with maps, can be found on the SAPOL website.
