Legislation to criminalise coercive control has passed State Parliament. When it commences, the new law will create a standalone offence to recognise this insidious form of abuse.
Representatives from Legal Services were honoured to be in attendance as the Bill passed, and we look forward to contributing as the State Government consults with key stakeholders before the laws come into effect.
In 2023, Legal Services was proud to deliver the 'See The Signs of Coercive Control' campaign with the support of the South Australian Attorney-General's Department and the Department of Human Services.
This campaign raised awareness of coercive control, the range of legal responses available to those experiencing controlling and abusive behaviour, and where to turn for help.
Legal Services continues to deliver legal education programs on coercive control in the community, including culturally appropriate sessions with Aboriginal communities and culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
We continue to support all South Australians with free legal information and advice via our Legal Helpline on 1300 366 424.
