Legal Services today officially commenced delivering local legal assistance services in Mount Gambier, marking a significant step forward in strengthening access to justice across South Australia’s South East.

The commencement of services was launched by the Attorney General, Kyam Maher, who welcomed the initiative as a significant step toward addressing unmet legal need in the region.

“This is a positive and much needed development for Mount Gambier and the South East,” the Attorney General said.

“A permanent Legal Services presence means people can receive timely, high quality legal help without needing to rely on visiting services. This initiative strengthens support for the community and ensures that those experiencing legal problems are not left waiting for assistance.”

“For too long, regional communities have had limited access to consistent legal services. Establishing a permanent presence fills a critical gap and provides people with the certainty that help is available locally when they need it most.”

Legal Services CEO Annmarie Lumsden said the organisation is committed to ensuring regional communities receive the same level of support available in metropolitan areas.

For many years, dedicated local practitioners and community legal centres have worked to support people with legal needs. Visiting or fly-in, fly-out services have also played an important role in ensuring people receive the help they need, particularly during periods of high demand.”

“By establishing a permanent presence, we are complementing and bolstering the work already being done in the region. Our aim is to add capacity, enhance support, and make it even easier for people to access timely advice.”

Legal Services will offer criminal, family and civil law assistance, supported by legal education and information services, with further expansion planned as the local team grows.

“Legal Services looks forward to working closely with local practitioners, community organisations and service providers to support people across the region,” Ms Lumsden said.

Construction of the new Legal Services Mount Gambier office is in its final stages, with the office set to open in the coming weeks. Until then, people in Mount Gambier and the South East needing to access local legal assistance can call 1300 366 424
