We are proud to announce that Legal Services’ Chief Counsel, Jeff Powell SC, has been appointed by the Governor to the District Court.
This is a significant milestone for Jeff, for the broader legal profession, and for Legal Services. While we are saddened to see a highly respected and valued colleague depart, we are delighted to see Jeff recognised with this well-deserved judicial appointment.
Jeff was admitted to practice in 1988 and has built a distinguished career spanning more than three decades, primarily in criminal law. He spent his early career prosecuting with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Crown Solicitor’s Office before joining the independent bar in 2006. At the bar, Jeff acted for both prosecution and defence, including in high-profile and complex trial and appellate matters, and maintained a strong commitment to legally aided clients.
Jeff developed a reputation as an advocate of exceptional ability, fair, measured and approachable, yet highly effective in the courtroom. His appointment as Senior Counsel in August last year reflected his expertise and standing within the profession.
Jeff joined Legal Services as Chief Counsel in February 2024. During his time with the organisation, he has led by example, appearing in complex criminal matters while also providing guidance and support across all areas of Legal Services. He has been generous with his time, always willing to provide advice, share his knowledge and contribute to the development of colleagues.
Jeff is well known for his approachable nature, sound judgement and ability to quickly identify the key issues in a matter and develop practical, effective strategies.
Jeff’s appointment reflects not only his personal achievements, but also the high regard in which Legal Services and its people are held by the Courts and the Government.
On behalf of everyone at Legal Services, we congratulate Jeff on his appointment. While he will be greatly missed, we are confident he will be an outstanding addition to the District Court and wish him every success in this next stage of his career.
