Legal Services makes new key appointments

Legal Services has appointed Jeff Powell as its new Chief Counsel, and Tania Sulan as Manager, Legal Information and Advice Division.

Jeff joins Legal Services as Chief Counsel with significant legal practice and counsel expertise, having worked at the independent bar since 2006 and prior to this at the Director of Public Prosecutions and Crown Solicitor’s Office.

Jeff has experience in the conduct of complex criminal trials in the District and Supreme Courts of SA and has also appeared in all Magistrates Courts, the Family Court, the SAET (both in workplace safety and workers compensation matters) and in environmental harm prosecutions (for both defence and prosecution).

The appointment of Jeff Powell follows the retirement of Greg Mead SC who retired in December, after 37 years of exemplary service at the Legal Services Commission.

Legal Services’ Chief Legal Officer Lucinda Byers thanked Greg for his excellent contribution to Legal Services and welcomed Jeff as he started in this key role for the organisation.

“Greg Mead made a significant contribution to Legal Services, and to the criminal justice system in this state, over a long period of time, and his knowledge, expertise and guidance of our lawyers during his 37 years with Legal Services will be sorely missed,” Ms Byers said.

“Jeff Powell is a highly experienced and respected member of the independent Bar, and has demonstrated a strong commitment to training and mentoring bar readers, having been an instructor in the criminal advocacy program of the SA Bar Readers Course since 2018. We are thrilled to have someone of his calibre join Legal Services.”

Tania Sulan joins Legal Services with extensive legal practice, leadership and management and business transformation expertise and experience, along with a passion for community, service and social justice outcomes and is currently a volunteer Committee member and Chair of JusticeNet SA.

Lucinda Byers said: “Beyond her passion for social justice, Tania has proven experience in managing an international litigation funding company, most recently as Managing Director, Transformation including oversight of the class action client liaison team.

“We are excited for Tania to join us in this critical role at Legal Services, to take our Legal Information and Advice Division to the next level.”
