International Women’s Day 2023 – #EmbraceEquity

By Legal Services Commission CEO Gabrielle Canny

Legal Services is celebrating our staff and our achievements this International Women’s Day (IWD).

This year’s theme is #EmbraceEquity – and on this important global day, we’re reaffirming our longstanding commitment to gender equity in our workplaces across the state and in our service delivery.

IWD is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

Legal Services has a proud record of supporting women throughout the history of the organisation. The first Director/CEO was Susan Armstrong. She was a trailblazer, and we have carried her inspiration over 45 years.

I’m honoured to be a Director/CEO with 70 per cent of staff and 50 per cent of our Leadership team who are women.

We’re also very proud of the recent appointments of two of our long serving practitioners Lana Chester and Natalie Brown as Magistrates.

We have a strong focus on supporting women clients including through our Women’s Domestic Violence Court Assistance Service (WDVCAS), our Domestic Violence Unit and our Health Justice partnerships – services all targeted at assisting and representing women who are experiencing or at risk of domestic violence, and who need assistance with protective measures such as intervention orders or tenancy applications.

Over 50 per cent of our total services are delivered to women, providing a multitude of legal assistance and ancillary services in family law, criminal law and civil law.

We celebrate our achievements on IWD championing gender equity at Legal Services and throughout all our lives.

As the saying goes, you can’t be what you can’t see – and that’s why I’m very pleased with our continued efforts to #EmbraceEquity at Legal Services, by backing up our words with actions.
